Toyota offers two engines in the Tacoma, a base 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine or a 3.5-liter V6. The interior is bland, the driver’s seating position can be uncomfortable, and the ride quality on the highway ride is subpar. In other ways, however, the Tacoma isn’t as dominant. It’ll also tow up to 6,800 pounds, and it enjoys a great reputation for high resale value and aftermarket parts support. For truck shoppers wanting to go as far off the beaten path as possible, the Tacoma will be a great choice. The Tacoma is one of the most capable pickup trucks on the road regardless of size. And with that all-wheel-drive system, the Ridgeline’s towing capacity tops out at just 5,000 pounds. The powertrain does have its limits, though, as its all-wheel-drive system isn’t as capable for off-road use as the four-wheel-drive systems on competitors. Under the hood, the Ridgeline’s 3.5-liter V6 engine provides smooth power and respectable fuel economy. You can even add an in-bed stereo system as an option. In the bed, for instance, there’s a watertight storage trunk plus a two-way tailgate that you can open either up and down or sideways for easier loading. The Ridgeline is the comfortable and quiet truck here. But the reality is that it’s one of the most appealing and capable trucks in its segment. The Ridgeline lacks the traditional body-on-frame construction that’s typical for a truck, and softer-looking styling might have you thinking it’s less capable. Which one is the best? Edmunds rounds up the lot to explain their individual benefits and drawbacks. The latest midsize trucks are able to tow, haul and transport passengers nearly as well as their full-size brethren, yet they offer increased maneuverability, lower starting prices, and the potential for better fuel economy. For them, a midsize truck is a viable alternative. But not everyone needs that much capability from a new pickup. But it’s not enough to sway this category in Porsche’s favor.Full-size trucks such as the Chevrolet Silverado and Ford F-150 are hugely popular. Build quality in the Taycan is of a higher standard, and you can do a lot more to customize a Taycan with special colors and interior materials. The top-level Turbo S starts at more than $185,000 and still doesn’t match a base Tesla’s features. A base 2021 Taycan starts at around $81,000, but features such as heated seats and adaptive cruise control are optional extras. Tesla also includes driver aids such as adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring and forward collision mitigation as standard. The Model S comes well equipped with standard features such as an adaptive air suspension, heated front and second-row seats, and a 22-speaker audio system. Porsche doesn’t have its own charging network, but it’s working with third-party companies to greatly increase the number of charging stations nationwide.Ī base 2021 Tesla Model S Long Range starts at around $80,000 the new Plaid variant, which has yet to come out, will be around $120,000. The upshot? In real-world driving you won’t notice as much of a range difference between these two cars as the specs suggest. While that’s below the Model S, a Taycan 4S overachieved in Edmunds’ testing, driving 323 miles before running out of juice. As of publication time, the longest EPA-estimated range is 227 miles for a midlevel Taycan 4S with the Performance Battery Plus. On paper, things aren’t so sunny for the Porsche Taycan. Access to Tesla’s proprietary network of nationwide Supercharger fast-charging stations is another boon. While Edmunds has found in its own range testing that Tesla’s EPA numbers are typically a little too optimistic, this is still among the longest distances you’ll get from an EV. The Model S Long Range - the least expensive trim - offers an EPA-estimated 412 miles of range. Is it good enough to unseat the Model S? Edmunds’ experts tested both to find out. The Taycan isn’t as revolutionary, but it offers similar capabilities plus the aura of Porsche’s sports car-building ethos. Only recently has a model come out to rival the Model S: the Porsche Taycan. Tesla’s continual updates along the way have kept the rest of the automotive industry in catch-up mode. Here was a sleek-looking EV with intriguing new technology features and unmatched performance and range. The Tesla Model S debuted nearly a decade ago and instantly portended the future of electric vehicles.
